How to File a Storm Damage Insurance Claim for Your Roof

A major storm rolls through, and now you're staring at missing shingles, dented gutters, or a ceiling stain that wasn't there before. Filing an insurance claim for roof damage can feel overwhelming — but it doesn't have to be. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process and get the coverage you're entitled to.

Step 1: Document the Damage Immediately

As soon as it's safe to do so, document everything. Take photos and videos of all visible damage — from the ground, from inside the attic, and anywhere else you can safely access. Note the date and time of the storm. If there's interior damage (water stains, wet insulation, damaged belongings), photograph that too. This documentation is the foundation of your claim.

Step 2: Prevent Further Damage

Most insurance policies require you to take reasonable steps to prevent additional damage after a covered event. If you have a hole in your roof or a broken window, cover it with a tarp or board it up. Keep receipts for any emergency materials you purchase — these costs are often reimbursable. Do not make permanent repairs before the adjuster visits, as this can complicate your claim.

Step 3: Contact Your Insurance Company

Call your insurance company or file a claim through their app or website as soon as possible. Most policies have a window for reporting storm damage — don't wait. Have your policy number ready and be prepared to describe the damage and the date of the storm. The insurer will assign an adjuster to inspect your property.

Step 4: Get a Professional Roofing Inspection

Before or alongside the insurance adjuster's visit, have a qualified roofing contractor inspect your roof. A professional inspection ensures that all damage is identified and documented — adjusters can miss items, especially subtle damage like granule loss or cracked flashing. A contractor's written assessment gives you an independent record to compare against the adjuster's report.

Step 5: Review the Adjuster's Report Carefully

Once the adjuster submits their report, review it carefully against your contractor's assessment. If items are missing or the scope of damage is underestimated, you have the right to dispute the findings. Your contractor can provide a supplemental estimate and, if necessary, communicate directly with the adjuster to advocate for a fair settlement.

Step 6: Choose Your Contractor and Schedule Repairs

Once your claim is approved, you're free to choose your own contractor — you are not required to use a company recommended by your insurer. Choose a licensed, insured contractor with a strong local reputation. Be wary of storm chasers who show up unsolicited after a major weather event — they often do substandard work and disappear when problems arise.
